PEDIGREE MAINE COONS IN SCOTLAND

Welcome to Sylverwood Maine Coons. We are small established Scottish breeders, based in Angus. Our aim is to breed quality kittens who are well socialised and good examples of the Breed Standard. Our cats are primarily kept as pets but we like to show those that are amenable to showing, their health and welfare taking priority over the desire to win prizes. Some of the cats presented on this web site regularly appear at GCCF shows.

The Maine Coon was originally the American wild cat. It shows all the characteristics of a typical hunter:  large eyes and ears, essential for detecting prey,  a big, muscular body and a fair turn of speed. Living mainly on farms it was highly valued by farmers for its ability to catch vermin.

It’s easy to see that the Maine Coon is a cold climate animal; it has a long silky coat, impressive ruff and trousers, ending in a long bushy tail.  Paws are huge and sprout tufts of hair between the toes. Underneath the top coat is a softer undercoat. It is not a fluffy cat like the Persian, the coat is designed to keep the Maine Coon warm and dry.

They are generally friendly cats, get on well with other pets and are pretty laid back characters.

Our Queens only have one litter a year to ensure that they remain healthy and strong. Kittens are brought up in the house and are handled and played with from an early age to ensure that they are well socialised. They are used to the general household environment, dogs and donkeys (www.scottishdonkeys.co.uk)! Kittens are registered with the GCCF, vet checked and vaccinated before leaving for their new homes.

‘Sylverwood’ is a registered prefix with the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF). We are members of the Nor’ East of Scotland Cat Club (Committee).
